How to Blueberry Jam: A Sweet and Simple Recipe

Blueberry jam is a delightful spread that can be used on toast, scones, or even as a topping for pancakes. It’s a perfect way to preserve the sweet taste of blueberries and enjoy them year-round. Ingredients

To make a batch of blueberry jam, you will need the following ingredients:

– 4 cups of fresh blueberries
– 1 cup of granulated sugar
– 1/4 cup of water
– 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
– 1 packet of powdered pectin (optional, for a firmer set)

Instructions

1. Wash and hull the blueberries: Rinse the blueberries under cold water and remove any stems or leaves. If you prefer, you can also hull the blueberries, but it’s not necessary.

2. Crush the blueberries: Place the blueberries in a large saucepan and crush them with a potato masher or fork. This will help the blueberries release their natural juices and make the jam more flavorful.

3. Add sugar and water: Pour the sugar and water into the saucepan with the blueberries. Stir the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved.

4. Bring to a boil: Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Stir frequently to prevent sticking.

5. Add lemon juice and pectin (optional): Once the mixture is boiling, add the lemon juice and pectin (if using). Stir for another 1-2 minutes to ensure the pectin is fully dissolved.

6. Skim the foam: As the mixture boils, you may notice foam forming on the surface. Use a spoon to skim off the foam, as it can affect the texture of the jam.

7. Boil for 5 minutes: Reduce the heat to medium and continue boiling the jam for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The jam should start to thicken and become glossy.

8. Test for doneness: To test if the jam is ready, place a small plate in the freezer for a few minutes. Then, drizzle a small amount of jam onto the plate. If it wrinkles when you push it with your finger, the jam is done. If not, continue boiling for another minute and test again.

9. Remove from heat: Once the jam is done, remove the saucepan from the heat. Skim off any remaining foam if necessary.

10. Ladle into jars: Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Wipe the rim of the jars with a clean cloth to remove any jam residue.

11. Seal the jars: Place the lids on the jars and tighten them until they are finger-tight. Allow the jars to cool at room temperature for a few hours.

12. Check for seal: Once the jars have cooled, check if they are sealed properly. You can do this by pressing the center of the lid; if it doesn’t move, the jar is sealed.
