In ancient Greece, around the 3rd century BCE, the mathematician and engineer Archytas of Tarentum is credited with creating the first known robot. This robot was a bird-like device that was designed to fly using steam power. While Archytas’s robot was a remarkable achievement for its time, it was not a true mechanical being capable of complex tasks or interactions with humans.

The next significant development in robotics came during the 15th century with the invention of automata. These were intricate mechanical devices designed to mimic human actions and movements. One of the most famous examples of an early robot is the Venturi Automaton, created by the Italian artist and inventor Hieronymus Bosch. This automaton was designed to play musical instruments and was powered by clockwork mechanisms.

Moving forward to the 20th century, the field of robotics began to evolve rapidly. In the 1920s, the Russian scientist and inventor Nikolai Evgrafovich Zhukovsky developed the first programmable robot, known as the “Robotnik.” This robot was capable of performing a series of pre-programmed tasks, marking a significant milestone in the development of robotics.

The 1950s saw further advancements in robotics with the creation of the first industrial robots. These robots were designed to perform repetitive tasks in manufacturing environments, improving efficiency and reducing human labor. One of the most notable early industrial robots was the Unimate, developed by George Devol and Joseph Engelberger in 1954. This robot was capable of lifting heavy objects and was used in the automobile industry.

As technology continued to advance, the field of robotics expanded into various applications, including space exploration, healthcare, and entertainment. In the 1960s, the United States launched the first robot to explore another planet, the Soviet Luna 17, which landed on the Moon in 1970. This marked the beginning of a new era in robotics, where robots were sent to distant planets to gather data and perform scientific experiments.

Today, robotics has become an integral part of our lives, with applications ranging from household appliances to autonomous vehicles. The question of when robots were first invented has been answered, but the journey of robotics is far from over.
